The Trust for Community Outreach and Education is a national organization that is made up of six regional affiliates that work mainly with rural communities. Its main goal is to strengthen the voice of the rural poor to engage effectively with local governments and to increase the food security in these rural areas. Previous support from Mott enabled the Trust to strengthen poor people's voices and leadership capacities in rural communities through training and mentorship support. The Trust supported the establishment of associations and assisted people to be self-employed through agricultural initiatives. Support over the next two years will enable the Trust to continue to strengthen community leadership through training, mentoring, exchange visits, and mutual learning and support. The Trust will also continue to advocate government to provide access to land for poor people and improve access to opportunities for sustainable farming.

The West Coast Community Foundation was founded in 2001 to support community development in the West Coast district of the Western Cape Province of South Africa. It makes grants, conducts training on various topics related to community development, and facilitates networking opportunities for community-based organizations in this area. Previous support from the Mott Foundation assisted the West Coast Community Foundation to introduce an asset-based approach to encourage communities to use available resources to drive their own development and be able to hold government accountable. This renewal grant will support the foundation to continue providing training and making grants to community-based organizations in the West Coast. The foundation will also continue building networks and strengthening relations with wealthier communities to access local resources and further strengthen local communities through the asset-based, community driven approach.

January, 2012
The Worldwide Initiative for Grantmaker Support (WINGS) was formally established in 2000, the same year the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation made its first grant to the organization. To date, Mott has provided seven grants, totaling $2.2 million, for WINGS’ support. During a recent visit to Mott’s home office in Flint, Michigan, Helena Monteiro – who became WINGS’ executive director in January 2011 – sat down with Communications Officer Maggie Jaruzel Potter for a brief chat. What follows is an edited version of that interview
