Governed by delegations from each of the Great Lakes states and provinces, the Great Lakes Commission was established in 1955 to protect and conserve the water resources of the Great Lakes Basin. An urgent threat is that of Asian Carp, an invasive species that is poised to enter and disrupt the Great Lakes ecosystem. Electric barriers have not stopped the invasive fish from arriving at the doorstep of Lake Michigan via its connections to the Mississippi River. With partial Mott support, the commission will bring together decisionmakers and stakeholders from across the Great Lakes to identify how to restore the natural division between the two water bodies as a way to halt Asian Carp movement while also providing economic, social, and environmental benefits to the region.
