The federal government approved the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact to protect the region's freshwater system from projects that would divert water outside of the basin. The National Wildlife Federation, a national conservation group with a strong presence in the Great Lakes Basin, has partnered with regional and state-level organizations to ensure the compact is effectively implemented in each of the Great Lakes states. With previous support, the grantee developed relevant policy recommendations, provided scientific and legal support to its state-level partners, and led public education and outreach efforts. With this renewal, the grantee will continue these efforts with a focus on improving each state's water management policies and strengthening the region's ability to oversee the compact.
