Steve Biko Foundation

Amount: $120,000
Grant Period: 3/1/2012 to 2/28/2014
Program: Civil Society
Program Area: South Africa
Geographic Focus: South Africa: South Africa (At Large)

Established in 1998, the Steve Biko Foundation seeks to nurture and develop community leadership -- especially among the youth -- to promote civic participation in politics, the economy, and culture. The grantee is inspired by the leadership legacy of Steven Bantu Biko, one of the founding figures of the black consciousness movement in South Africa who was murdered by the security police in September 1977. In the past two years, the grantee conducted public lectures, seminars, and dialogues on topical issues and supported various projects in arts and culture, economic justice, and social development. It also piloted "FrankTalk", a program for young people committed to utilizing their skills and experience for the advancement of South African society. This grant will continue to support the grantee's efforts to nurture and affirm fundamental human values. The primary focus over the next two years will be launching and running the Steve Biko Centre, a legacy project that will house the majority of its programs and will allow for the expansion of its work.
