Social Surveys contributes to social transformation through specialist social research. For the past two decades, the grantee has conducted many studies for clients working in different sectors throughout Africa. In 2011, the grantee initiated a research study entitled "Towards a Better Understanding of Civil Society in Africa - a Multi-country Perspective." This study will offer new thinking on how civil society in Africa can be better understood and defined. This grant will support the second phase of the study, which will include presenting the findings of phase one, collecting new empirical data on civil society in South Africa, conducting interviews with civil society leaders in Southern Africa to capture their perspectives, and finding existing data to test definitions of civil society and their inclusiveness.
