The National Alliance for the Development of Community Advice Offices was initiated in 2005 to strengthen and sustain the community advice office sector in South Africa. Community advice offices provide free basic legal advice and other social services to poor people. Initially, the alliance was hosted by the Black Sash Trust before becoming an independent institution in March 2012. Mott-supported activities have included conducting research on the size and scope of the community advice office sector, developing an information technology system to present an accurate picture of the work of advice offices, and establishing provincial forums to help coordinate and build a cohesive voice for the sector. This grant will support the National Alliance for the Development of Community Advice Offices with efforts to unlock funding for community advice offices from various stakeholders, encourage community advice offices to use a case management system that shows the impact of interventions, and explore the establishment of a sustainability fund for community advice offices.
