This grant supports Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement, a learning community of funders established in 2006 doing work in the fields of civic engagement, service, and democratic renewal. Currently the grantee includes 23 funders. Past efforts have focused on issues including the civic engagement of noncollege-bound youth, efforts by local governments to reinvent the way they interact with citizens and promoting service as a civic pathway out of poverty. The grantee is currently working on five different projects: 1) exploring the linkage between information and engagement; 2) promoting better understanding between those involved in civic engagement and diversity/inclusion work; 3) examining the impact of the transparency and accountability movements in the field of philanthropy; 4) helping Detroit funders deal more effectively with the civic engagement aspect of their local work; and 5) promoting the concept of service as a civic pathway out of poverty and into opportunity.
