This grant will support the development of a women's fund in Cape Town which has two goals: a) to encourage a culture of giving among local individuals in South Africa, and b) to support local grassroots women's leadership development and encourage women's engagement in community development. The trust has a strong list of patrons, a committed board of trustees, and a part-time staff person. It has had some success in fundraising resulting in an initial set of six awards being given in August 1998 to women's organizations with outstanding women leaders. Over the next two years, the trust will work to build its endowment, organize events to encourage giving, establish additional criteria for making grants, and hold an annual awards event to raise the profile of the women and organizations they support. This grant will support the organization's operating budget including some travel costs to visit the Global Fund for Women and/or other women's funds elsewhere in the world.
