This renewal grant provides general purpose support for CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation, an international alliance established in 1993 dedicated to strengthening citizen action and civil society worldwide. The grantee's membership currently includes over 1,000 representatives from more than 100 countries. Its work includes researching the state of civil society; raising awareness and education about civil society; and mobilizing quick, public responses to situations where civil society is threatened. Major activities in 2012 included the publication of the State of Civil Society 2011 report, a World Assembly with 642 participants from 100 countries, and a participatory planning process leading to new 2013-2017 strategic directions. The grantee's new strategic priorities for the next five years will focus on connecting different sources of citizen action, fostering the best possible enabling environment for civil society, and ensuring the maximum influence of civil society on global decisions.
