Energy is vital to improving the quality of life for the poor, providing income-generating opportunities, and increasing productivity in all sectors, yet nearly 1.5 billion people still lack access to electricity in developing countries. The World Bank and other international financial institutions have not adequately addressed this energy-poverty challenge. Through this project, the Sierra Club Foundation will seek to strengthen the World Bank's environmental and social standards as well as encourage investment in projects that reduce energy poverty while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions and minimizing environmental harm. Over the last grant period, its policy work contributed to significant increases in U.S. export credit agencies lending for renewable energy and the creation of the Green Climate Fund.
