United States

This program area supports a strong enabling environment for philanthropy and the nonprofit sector in the U.S., emphasizing accountability, effectiveness and inclusiveness.

Funding Priorities for Nonprofit Sector Effectiveness and Accountability

Grantmaking under this objective focuses on large membership associations and organizational capacity-building providers on a national level or in the state of Michigan with targeted services for community foundations.

We seek access by philanthropic and other nonprofit-sector practitioners to learning opportunities, capacity-building assistance and policy advocacy that enhance their organizations’ effectiveness and accountability. We are making grants:

  • to leading national and Michigan nonprofit sector and philanthropy membership organizations whose services strengthen their constituencies and advance the field;
  • to key national and Michigan providers of organizational capacity-building tools and services to meet the sector’s current and future challenges; and
  • to intermediary organizations that provide technical assistance and regranting funds to enhance community foundations’ accountability and effectiveness.

Funding Priorities for Racial and Ethnic Diversity in Philanthropy

Grantmaking under this objective focuses on national-level infrastructure for racial and ethnic diversity in philanthropy, including research efforts to help the field better understand challenges and progress in this area. In addition, a regional focus in Michigan is designed not only to address this issue in our home state, but also to generate significant learning that can be shared with the field nationally.

We seek more inclusive practices within philanthropy so people of racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds increasingly impact decisionmaking and participate as leaders within the field. We are making grants:

  • for national programs that help create an environment that is supportive of increased racial and ethnic diversity within the field of philanthropy; and
  • for the Council of Michigan Foundations as it begins to ramp up a major regionwide effort to increase diversity in philanthropy among its members.

Funding priorities for Nonprofit Sector Research

Grantmaking under this objective focuses primarily on enhancing the collection, aggregation and dissemination of sectorwide data.

We seek timely and reliable generation and dissemination of data and research on philanthropy and the nonprofit sector for the benefit of the field. We are making grants:

  • to leading national and regional analytical institutions that collect, aggregate and disseminate sectorwide data; and
  • for research on sectorwide issues that have critical policy implications for philanthropy and the nonprofit sector.
