The mission of the Environment program is to support the efforts of an engaged citizenry working to create accountable and responsive institutions, sound public policies, and appropriate models of development that protect the diversity and integrity of selected ecosystems in North America and around the world.

Our mission recognizes that effective stewardship of the Earth requires both changes in behavior and new ways of thinking. It requires that environmental considerations be factored into personal and institutional decisionmaking. It also requires a willingness on the part of people with diverse interests to try to understand one another's perspectives and seek common ground.

Environmental challenges in the U.S. and worldwide are severe. Successfully addressing them will require vision and leadership from individuals in communities, businesses and government.

The funding priorities that follow describe how the Foundation hopes to contribute to meeting these challenges.

The Environment program is organized into three program areas:

I.   Conservation of Freshwater Ecosystems

II.  International Finance for SustainabilityInternational

III. Special Initiatives

Funding for unsolicited proposals is limited throughout the program. Those interested in applying for funding are strongly encouraged to submit letters of inquiry instead of a full proposal.
