18MhgacyindaausgafershooltoboosrosyadahevemehenHerbHiggincoordinatorotheSaeHarboraterschoolprograminMichiganCityIndianaaskedAlWalustomentoranewlyorganizedhighschoolroboticsteamWalusnotonlysignedonasavolunteerbutalsorecruited14engineersromotherareacompanies.WalusisalongtimememberoMichiganCitysEconomicDevelopmentCorp.andonthestaoChristopherBurkeEngineering.Hewasconcernedwithpreparingtheareasnext-generationworkorceonecapableofllingtheincreasinglyhigh-techhigh-skilldemandsolocalindustryandbusinesses.Afterschoolwasourfootinthedoorhesaid.Itwasanopportunitytopiquekidsinterestinsciencetechnologyandengineering.IncreasinglyWalusalsoseesaterschoolasthespacewherecurriculuminnovationcantakeplaceinnovationsthateventuallycouldimpacttheregularschoolday.OurlocalbranchofPurdueUniversityhadexpandedtheirengineeringprogramthatswhatultimatelysoldmeonthevalueoSaeHarborhesaid.Ifourkidsaregoingtotakeadvantageothatopportunitywehavetostartengagingthemwiththesciencesbeorehighschool.Thatsjusttoolate.SaeHarborsemphasisonSTEMScienceTechnologyEngineeringandMathematicsparallelsrecentchangesatthedistrictlevelwhereSuperintendentBarbaraEason-Watkinshasinstitutedadjustmentstocurriculaatthemiddle-schoollevelcreatedtwoelementarymagnetschoolsoneowhichocusesonSTEMeducationandimplementedacomprehensiveinstructionaltechnologyplanrecognizednationallyoritsinnovativeclassroommethodology.Eason-Watkinsworkedor35yearsortheChicagoPublicSchoolsultimatelyservingasthechieeducationofcer.AteracceptingtheMichiganCitypositiontwoyearsagosheconducteda60-daylisteningtourofthecommunityandthenbeganrestructuringthedistrict.Theschoolsareintegraltothelong-termsuccessofourcommunityshesaid.Whatparentslocalbusinessesandacultywantismorerigorousprogrammingorourkidsprogrammingthatisrelevantto21stcenturyskills.Assuperintendentmyjobistoidentiyandpushthekeyleversthatwillhelpthedistrictcreatethebestpossibleconditionsoracademicsuccess.ThoseleversincludeaterschoolprogrammingaccordingtoJanRadfordthedistrictsdirectorocurriculumdevelopment.LikeEason-WatkinsRadfordviewsafterschoolasacurricularextensionoftheacademicdayasaespacewherestudentscantakerisksaskquestionstrynewthingsandapplywhattheyvelearned.StudentsconstructpaperrocketsduringanafterschoolprogramfocusingonSTEM.
