5knittingtogetheromultipleapproaches.AndaswelookorworkablesolutionsIbelieveweshouldocussomeattentiononthehoursbeoreandaterschool.ForithereisonethingwevediscoveredattheMottFoundationthroughyearsoundingcommunityeducationprogramsinourearliestdaysandmorerecentlysupportingaterschoolinitiativesitsthattheproductiveuseotimespentbeoreandaterschoolaswellasduringthesummermonthsormsanimportantoundationorlearning.BynomeansdoIwishtosuggestthataterschoolistheanswertotheproblemsacingoureducationsystem.Butbasedonwhatwevelearnedovertimeitcanbeanimportantpieceothepuzzle.TheMottFoundationsdeepinvolvementintheeducationfeldhasitsrootsinoursupportorcommunityeducationbeginningin1935.InitiatedasFlintstruggledtogaineconomicstabilityduringtheGreatDepressiontheFoundationsundingorcommunity-basedaterschoolandsummerprogrammingwasbuiltuponcommunitycollaborationandpartnershipeectiveuseoexistingschoolandcommunityacilitiesandcoordinationoservices.Attheheartothosefrstschool-basedprogramswasadesiretokeepkidssaeactiveandengagedinproductivelearningduringthelateaternoonandsummerhours.Thatdesireinpartsparkedourinterestin1996injoiningwiththeederalgovernmentinthe21stCenturyCommunityLearningCenters21stCCLCinitiativeapartnershipthatovertimehasresultedinaprolierationohigh-qualityextended-learningprogramsthatarestrengtheningnotonlylocalschoolsandamiliesbutalsothecommunitiesinwhichtheyoperate.Theinitiativewasconceivedasa1billionprojectbytheU.S.DepartmentoEducationthatwouldbuildona40millionprogramalreadyunderway.ForourparttheMottFoundationbeganwitha2millioncommitmentanda55millionpledgeormultiyearexpansion.AspartothepartnershiptheFoundationundedactivitiesbettersuitedtophilanthropythangovernmentincludingtechnicalassistancegeneratingpublicwillseedingevaluationandidentiyingpromisingpractices.ImportantlyovertimetheFoundationsinvestmentinaterschoolhasbeenocusedonacomprehensivestrategytotakeaterschooltoscaleacrossthecountry.AspartothateortweandtoomanyundingpartnerstonamehavesupportedthesystematicgrowthLAsBESTafterschoolcomputerclassesatGrapeStreetElementarySchoolprovelearningcanbefunandexciting
