A Note To Our Readers

Regular readers of Mott Mosaic will notice that this edition takes a different approach from our usual potpourri of features about our grantees. In the 32-page special report within this issue, we have two goals.

MichiganOne is to create an in-depth, objective picture of Michigan's economy in the spring of 2008 because we believe that many — maybe most — people outside Michigan are unaware of the ongoing economic struggles being faced within the Mott Foundation’s home state.

The other is to highlight promising efforts by a few of our grantees to address some of the state’s current and future challenges.

As part of this project, we have interviewed dozens of experts from policy organizations, think tanks and universities over the past six months, including several grantees.

We recognize that we are just one of many Michigan foundations working to tackle the state’s problems. While we do not have the space here to highlight all foundations’ efforts within Michigan, scores of these philanthropies are funding projects to better their home communities and to improve the quality of lives of the people who live there.

Together, some foundations, including Mott, are supporting larger, statewide collaborations. In addition, we have been the chief funder in other, smaller efforts. We have included examples of both within this special report.

We hope you will find this edition of Mosaic useful in understanding both Michigan’s problems and also a small portion of what is being done to help address them. We welcome your comments.
