Spotlight: Building Michigan’s economy is focus of $850,000 grant

About the Grantee

The Prima Civitas Foundation (PCF), launched in 2006, is working to help Michigan residents and leaders create a more globally-connected, innovative and talent-driven economy in the Great Lake State.

Headquartered in East Lansing, Prima Civitas’ efforts include positioning Michigan and key geographic regions within the state for global economic opportunity; organizing resources that support a more competitive and vibrant economy; and developing statewide workforce strategies that provide growth opportunities for both workers and employers.

Since its founding, Prima Civitas has received nearly $4.76 million in grants from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.

Purpose of the Grant

The 2013 work of Prima Civitas will include a focus on building the strength of Michigan’s economy and workforce. Among the related activities:

    • Regional initiatives, such as the Flint Area Reinvestment Office, that help communities develop and implement locally focused economic recovery strategies. Those efforts include nurturing public and private collaborations around economic issues, and helping organizations identify, access and use federal and state funding to support economic initiatives.
    • Statewide activities that, building on the Mott-funded Moving Ideas to Market initiative, seek to grow the entrepreneurial spirit in Michigan through educational partnerships between entrepreneurs, support organizations and educational institutions.
    • Coordinated efforts with state and national partners to build the region’s talent pipeline and help small and midsized businesses across Michigan find skilled and experienced workers.
    • An international portfolio that aims to help Michigan-based businesses secure projects and partnerships with business opportunities around the globe, and capitalize on the state’s key position within the North American trade corridor to pursue import and export opportunities.

“The C.S. Mott Foundation is a remarkable partner in the battle to return Michigan’s communities to prosperity,” said Steve Webster, CEO at Prima Civitas. “PCF is committed to leveraging Mott support to ensure that the state is moving toward a sustainable, innovative and globally competitive economy.”
