C.S. Mott Foundation acquires option to purchase Character Inn

FLINT, Michigan — The option to purchase the now-vacant Character Inn in downtown Flint has been transferred from the Crim Fitness Foundation to the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.

According to Mott President William S. White, the Foundation wants the 16-story structure preserved and is collaborating with the Crim Fitness Foundation in an ongoing process to plan and develop future uses for the building.

The building was purchased by the Institute for Basic Life Principles in June 2000 to operate a center offering character training to individuals and groups. The structure opened in 1981 as a Hyatt Regency Hotel.

Crim Fitness Foundation officials indicated the Center of Excellence on Health and Fitness, originally envisioned for the Character Inn, continues to be under development with the location and specifics yet to be determined.

The Crim Fitness Foundation has 30 years of demonstrated success in its ability to get people moving. The Foundation is committed to assuming a leadership role in serving the national agenda for improving the health status of our nation’s communities. It has launched several year-round programs designed to motivate children and adults to become active and embrace fitness as a community and family value. For more information, visit crim.org.

The Mott Foundation, established in 1926 by an automotive pioneer, is a private philanthropy committed to supporting projects that promote a just, equitable and sustainable society.
