C.S. Mott Foundation adds two to Board of Trustees


FLINT, Michigan – Frederick S. (Fritz) Kirkpatrick and Charlie Nelms have been elected to the Board of Trustees of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, effective Jan. 1, 2010.

Kirkpatrick is vice chairman and chief executive officer of the MFO Management Company in Flint.

Nelms, who also served on the Foundation’s Board of Trustees in 2008, is chancellor of North Carolina Central University in Durham and was chancellor at the University of Michigan-Flint from 1994 through 1998.

“We are extremely pleased to have both of these men on our board,” Mott Chairman William S. White said. “They are familiar with our home community and our Foundation. Their knowledge and experience will be welcome additions.”

Kirkpatrick has been with the MFO Management Company since 1990. In his current position, he manages a full-service, private, wealth management company with more than 100 clients.

Prior to that, he worked 22 years for First of America Bank, N.A., ultimately serving as senior vice president and regional trust manager over five trust departments in two states.

Kirkpatrick holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Western Michigan University. He also attended Michigan State University, and has served on a number of charitable and corporate boards.

He and his wife, Gayle, live in Metamora, Mich. They have two children.

Nelms has headed NCCU, a historically black school, since Aug. 1, 2007. It is part of the 16-campus University of North Carolina system and has a student enrollment of nearly 9,000.

His career in higher education began at Earlham College in Indiana (1973-77), where he rose to become associate dean for student development. Other experience includes associate director of the Center for Human Development and Education Services at University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (1977-78), associate dean for academic affairs at Indiana University Northwest (1978-84), vice president for student services at Sinclair Community College in Ohio (1984-87), chancellor of Indiana University East (1987-94) and vice president for institutional development and student affairs at Indiana University (1998-2007).

Nelms holds a bachelor’s degree in agronomy and chemistry from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. He also holds two degrees from Indiana University -- a master’s in higher education and student affairs and a doctorate in higher education administration.

Nelms has been active in many professional, civic and higher education organizations during his career. He also has written a number of articles for professional publications.

He and his wife, Jeanetta Sherrod Nelms, have one son.

There are now 15 trustees on the Mott Foundation’s board. Five are members of the Mott family.

The Mott Foundation, established in 1926 by an automotive pioneer, is a private philanthropy committed to supporting projects that promote a just, equitable and sustainable society. It supports nonprofit programs throughout the U.S. and, on a limited geographic basis, internationally.
