“We are extremely pleased that Dr. Patiño has agreed to accept another term of service,” said Mott Foundation President and CEO William S. White. “His knowledge, experience and mediating presence make him an invaluable member of Mott’s Board of Trustees.”

Vice Chancellor Emeritus for the California State University system, Patiño earned a doctorate in human behavior (urban development) from United States International University in San Diego. He earlier earned a master’s degree in education from San Diego State University and a bachelor’s degree in political science from San Diego State University.

During his career in higher education, Patiño worked at United States International University and the University of Southern Colorado, ultimately serving as vice chancellor of the 23-campus California State University system — the largest senior university system in the United States. He also served as President of the California State University Foundation.

Previously, Patiño served as secretary of the California Health and Welfare Agency and director of the California Employment Development Department under Governor Edmund G. Brown. He also served as director of the Arizona Department of Economic Security under Governor Bruce Babbitt.

Patiño has served on the staff and boards of several philanthropic institutions, and since 2001, has been a member of the board of directors of the Marguerite Casey Foundation in Seattle, Washington. He was founding president of the Marin (California) Community Foundation.
