The program goal is to stimulate greater public participation in decision making and community building in five counties in eastern Croatia. To this end, during the grant period the Community Foundation Slagalica will provide grants, organize training, raise public awareness about civic responsibility, and carry out advocacy initiatives. The foundation was established in 2007 by two nongovernmental organizations in eastern Croatia, both of which are long-term Mott grantees. Building on the extensive experience of these two organizations, the foundation will help local communities implement more participatory decision-making processes, stimulate civic involvement in improving community life, and mobilize local resources for local projects and activities. The foundation is based in Osijek and works in five counties in eastern Croatia.

This grant provides partial support for the Center on Philanthropy Panel Study, an ongoing research study to collect detailed data describing defining characteristics and the philanthropic behavior of American families. The study follows giving and volunteering habits of 8,000 households over time and over generations as families mature, face differing economic circumstances, and encounter changes in their family size, health, and other factors. It is conducted in conjunction with the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research's Panel Study of Income Dynamics, which has surveyed families since 1968 and to which a philanthropy component was added in 2001. The dataset produced by the study is the best, most accurate resource for measuring giving and volunteering in the United States and is used extensively by researchers. Founded in 1987, the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis conducts research, offers academic programs, and provides philanthropic services.
