Donors want to tackle tough issues, says community foundation leader

Stephen Hammersley and his role as Chief Executive of the London-based Community Foundation Network (CFN) is the focus of an article in The Guardian (United Kingdom). Hammersley discusses why donors are increasingly using community foundations as an effective and efficient way to address community challenges. CFN is a Mott grantee.

Flint native authors report on U.S. auto industry

Kristen Dziczek -- a former resident of the Mott Foundation’s hometown of Flint, Michigan -- is the lead author of the recent report, Beyond the Big Leave: The Future of U.S. Automotive Human Resources. The report, produced with Mott support by the Ann Arbor-based Center for Automotive Research (CAR), provides predictions about employment in the U.S. automotive market through 2016. Diziczek is the director of CAR’s Program for Automotive Labor and Education.

Report says nationalists' opposition weakens war crimes prosecution in Serbia

Two grantees funded by Mott’s Civil Society program -- The International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) and the Humanitarian Law Center – were quoted in an article appearing in the Institute for War & Peace Reporting. The article also included information from the recent ICTJ report, Against the Current: War Crimes Prosecution in Serbia.

Program helps youth create pathways out of poverty

YouthBuild USA -- a Mott grantee -- provides low-income young people between the ages of 16 and 24 years the opportunity to complete their high school education, learn job skills in construction- and housing-related trades, and transform their lives and their communities.

Environmental group calls Catawba River country's "most endangered"

American Rivers, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization and also a Mott grantee, has named the Catawba River to the top of its annual Top Ten list of the nation's most endangered rivers. The amount of water withdrawn from the river, which runs through both North and South Carolina, is expected to double in the next 50 years due to regional growth.

Summer job program for youth continues

Helping teens in the Mott's home community of Genesee County, Michigan, find summer jobs and access other skill-building experiences is the focus of the 2008 Summer Youth Initiative (SYI). The initiative is coordinated by the Genesee Regional Chamber of Commerce with help from a recent Mott grant of $775,000 to the Genesee Area Focus Fund. Mott Foundation support for the SYI has totaled $7 million since 1996.

Report highlights growing earnings gap across U.S.

A new report suggests that the earnings gap between U.S. families at the bottom and middle of the income scale, and those at the top is widening at an accelerating pace. Pulling Apart: A State-by-State Analysis of Income Trends also suggests strategies for helping to reduce that gap. The report was published by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, and the Economic Policy Institute, two Mott Foundation grantees.

Grantmakers tour U.S.-Mexico border projects

U.S.-Mexico Border Philanthropy Partnership works with nonprofit organizations in Yuma, Arizona, to improve conditions for low-income children. The Mott Foundation granted $250,000 to Synergos Insitute to create the partnership.

Program supports teacher diversity in Mott’s home community

Increasing the ethnic and gender diversity of students pursuing teaching careers in Mott's home community of Genesee County, Michigan, is the goal of a joint program launched in January by Baker College of Flint, Mott Community College (MCC) and the University of Michigan-Flint. The Flint STAR (Smart Teachers As Role Models) program is being conducted in partnership with the Phelps-Stokes Fund of Washington, D.C., and implemented with the support of a one-year, $106,782 grant from the Mott Foundation to MCC.
