Federal funding, programs and regulations are critical for the protection of the Great Lakes ecosystem. With competing demands on their attention, federal decisionmakers must be reminded of the unique nature of the Great Lakes ecosystem, and be presented with useful information on policy issues relevant to its protection. This multiyear grant supports efforts of the Northeast-Midwest Institute to organize the Great Lakes delegation within Congress for unified action on behalf of the Lakes. Efforts will promote awareness within congressional, state and non-governmental offices of the Great Lakes' fragile ecosystem. Policymakers in Washington and the region will be kept informed of program needs, scientific developments, legislative proposals and issues. Plans for doing that include: a monthly newsletter aimed at Capitol Hill, monthly briefings and strategy sessions for Capitol Hill and state office staffers, legislative proposals, press conferences, and an annual regional summit to discuss legislation.
