Lake Michigan is the second largest lake within the Great Lakes ecosystem and one of the most popular with residents of the region. Since 1970, the Lake Michigan Federation has worked throughout the Lake Michigan basin to rally citizen support for protection of the lake's water quality and habitat, and to create opportunities for citizens to influence policy decisions relevant to the health of the lake and its dependent life.
Funding will support the federation as it implements projects on behalf of the lake's environment. Areas of priority include promoting environmentally sound land use practices, including greater public shoreline access; protecting critical fish and wildlife habitat, including dunes and wetlands; and cutting toxic pollution that threatens the health of children and community quality of life. Activities will include producing a "Green Planning Guide" to advise citizens throughout the basin on how to promote better ecosystem-based, land-use practices; and participating in policy discussions and venues concerning reducing input of toxics to the lake from airborne sources.
The mission of the Lake Michigan Federation is to protect Lake Michigan and the Great Lakes by promoting water quality, habitat and wetland preservation and restoration, sustainable shoreline and lake uses, public access to the lake and shoreline, and meaningful public participation in decisions that affect the lake.
