The mission of the Lake Michigan Federation is to restore fish and wildlife habitat, conserve land and water, and eliminate toxics in the watershed of the largest lake within the United States through education, research, law, science, economics and strategic partnerships.//Multiyear funding will enable the federation to build institutional capacity and further develop Lake Michigan programs. Activities will include planning a summit on aquatic habitat restoration in Chicago; monitoring implementation of the Great Lakes Initiative; working on issues associated with bacterial contamination of water bodies within the basin; and addressing fishery management and aquatic nuisance species in the Great Lakes.//Accomplishments during the past year included compelling the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to finalize water quality standards to protect Great Lakes water quality, wildlife and people; winning agreement from the city of Chicago to build wetlands and reconfigure sewer drainage to prevent road salt and other pollutants from discharging into the shore waters of Lake Michigan; initiating efforts to promote local protection of sand dunes from sand mining operations; completing a strategic plan for protection of Lake Michigan; and launching a media campaign to build public understanding of lake problems and solutions.
