In February 2001, the state of Michigan announced that it intended to lift its moratorium on new oil and gas drilling underneath the Great Lakes. This grant increase will allow the Lake Michigan Federation, working in cooperation with other nonprofit organizations, to generate public support for the institution of a permanent moratorium on directional drilling underneath the Great Lakes. Funds will support a public outreach campaign as well as costs associated with participation in meetings concerning the state’’s mineral leasing and extraction policies.
