The goal of the project is to connect environmental organizations, citizens' groups, government officials and other stakeholders in the southern region of South America in order to develop tools for integrating environmental considerations in regional economic integration processes. Multiyear funding will be used to strengthen the growing network of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other opinion leaders in the region and provide the network with analyses of regional and global trade negotiations. Activities will include monitoring environmental and social components of regional trade agreements, including Mercosur, the South American Free Trade Agreement, and the Free Trade of the Americas Agreement; producing at least seven reports on trade and environment; conducting workshops or meetings in at least four countries; and providing monthly electronic bulletins on trade and environment and adding a new monthly bulletin on energy and environment in the Southern Cone. During the past two years, activities included preparing case studies on critical issues for trade policy in the region; developing a network of partners in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Paraguay to discuss regional trade alternatives; conducting workshops with partners in the region to help citizens understand the structures of the different trade agreements; and disseminating information on economic alternatives.
