For more than three decades, the Lake Michigan Federation has been working to restore fish and wildlife habitat, conserve land and water, and eliminate toxics in the watershed of Lake Michigan. Its current mission is to promote citizen action to protect the water quality, shoreline and biological diversity of Lake Michigan through research, education, advocacy and stewardship programs in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin.
Multiyear funding will enable the federation to focus on building its organizational capacity and implementing conservation programs. Objectives include strengthening volunteerism; increasing membership; establishing a high-level donor program; participating in efforts to implement Annex 2001; developing biodiversity recovery plans to restore urban aquatic habitats; and addressing the issue of aquatic nuisance species.
Recent accomplishments included developing media capabilities and increasing media exposure; launching a Web site to provide up-to-date information to the public about the Great Lakes; expanding events about Great Lakes issues to reach more people; and conducting a multiyear planning effort to diversify and increase revenue.
