The Louisiana Environmental Action Network seeks to improve the quality of surface water in Louisiana by monitoring federal requirements, checking compliance, analyzing toxic release inventory data, documenting Mississippi River contamination, raising citizen awareness of water quality issues and providing technical assistance.
Multiyear funding will support activities that include helping design and monitor implementation of institutional reforms of the state environmental agency; reviewing the terms of proposed water discharge permits; monitoring compliance with existing permits; providing technical assistance to community groups facing serious surface water quality problems; analyzing the adequacy of proposed total maximum daily load (TMDL) plans for stream segments with impaired water quality; and developing and launching a riverkeeper program on a stretch of the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and New Orleans.
Accomplishments during the past two years included monitoring implementation of Louisiana's TMDL program; evaluating TMDL remediation plans for five impaired waterways; providing technical assistance on water quality issues to more than 50 community groups; and helping persuade officials to establish new pollution limits for Louisiana waters.
