Adequate political support from key leaders and actual policies are vital to the lasting success of any education reform effort. The Education Commission of the States' (ECS) Time, Learning and Afterschool Task Force was developed to help policymakers understand the elements of successful afterschool programs and encourage the creation of policies that strengthen the quality and sustainability of afterschool programs.
Funding will enable ECS to coordinate and staff a task force made up of 10 to 12 afterschool practitioners, experts and policymakers that will meet three times during the next year, including a site visit to a model afterschool program in each location. Between meetings, ECS will discuss ideas with statewide afterschool networks and vet proposed policy recommendations with its policymaker constituents. An executive summary will be disseminated upon completion of the task force.
ECS is an interstate compact established in 1965 to improve public education by facilitating the exchange of information, ideas and experiences among state policymakers and education leaders.
