The Uruguayan Study Center of Appropriate Technologies carries out research and promotes alternative technology, policy and sustainable development models that aim to protect the environment in South America.
Multiyear funding will enable the center to address the environmental impacts of policies related to trade and economic integration processes in border areas; research the role of regional funding agencies on environmental policies; assess the roles and impacts of international conservation organizations on environmental policies and projects; monitor ongoing trade negotiations and integration strategies and determine their environmental implications; and disseminate research findings.
Accomplishments during the past two years included identifying "hot spots" where trade policies impact the environment in South America; linking trade and integration policies to commercial interests and infrastructure development; and developing proposals for alternative policies that support environmentally sustainable development in the context of economic integration.
