In 2002, the Northeast-Midwest Institute launched the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative to enable municipal leaders to become more active in Great Lakes issues at the regional level. The goals of the initiative are to secure a "seat at the table" for officials within every Great Lakes policy institution; develop a best practices network so that mayors can share their knowledge about implementing environmental protection and ecosystem restoration projects; and encourage participation in major policy discussions on Great Lakes protection and restoration issues.
Funding will support the transition of the initiative to an independent nonprofit organization. Activities will include developing and implementing business and program plans, while maintaining focus on the program goals of the initiative.
The Northeast-Midwest Institute, established in 1977, seeks to advance the environmental quality and economic vitality of the northeastern and Midwestern U.S.
