Cradock Masizame Community Development Centre

To support a community healing and development program in the Eastern Cape.

Cradock is a small, rural town in the Eastern Cape that was in the forefront of the struggle against apartheid. Its fierce resistance made it a target of the apartheid regime, with many atrocities committed against the black community. The most brutal was the 1985 assassination - by mostly white, state security forces - of four of the community's most prominent black leaders, a case infamously referred to as the "Cradock Four." Today, many are still devastated and traumatized by these events of the past, and the old divisions between whites and blacks persist. This grant will enable the Cradock Masizame Community Development Centre to support a community healing and development process to assist the community in overcoming its violent past, facilitate intracommunity dialogue and promote reconciliation. The program will be based on the lessons and recommendations of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and are designed to deal with both the individual and the collective. It will use a combination of oral interviews, meetings, workshops and seminars. The center was established in 1989 to serve as a vehicle for development in the area of Cradock and surrounding towns in the Eastern Cape.
