This grant will provide support for the Flint Smart Teachers as Role Models Initiative, which focuses on providing a leadership development curriculum for students in a teacher education program at Mott Community College, Baker College, and University of Michigan-Flint, in order to address the scarcity of African-American male teachers in the elementary and secondary schools of Flint and Genesee County. This funding will support the implementation of the initiative in each of the local colleges with educational degree programs. The program is part of a larger national replication effort, based on the Call Me MISTER program, also funded by the Foundation, to provide educational support and assistance to male students of color pursuing a career in K-12 education.
