Strengthening Forest Governance Through REDD

World Resources Institute

Amount: $150,000
Grant Period: 6/1/2008 to 5/31/2009
Program: Environment
Program Area: International Finance for Sustainability
Geographic Focus: Global: All Continents

The world is losing over 18 million acres of forest per year, primarily in the tropical areas of Africa, Asia, and Latin America, which has serious implications for the world's poor, its biodiversity, and climate change. The 2007 meeting of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change agreed to incorporate the first serious consideration of forest protection as a key element of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. With this grant, the World Resources Institute will use its expertise in environmental governance and forestry to develop clear criteria for assessing and improving forestry governance as a prerequisite to any discussion on whether and how market forces should be used as incentives for tropical forest conservation.
