Centre for Peace, Nonviolence and Human Rights Osijek

Amount: $60,000
Grant Period: 7/1/2009 to 6/30/2011
Program: Civil Society
Program Area: Central/Eastern Europe and Russia
Geographic Focus: Croatia

This grant supports the strengthening of a key institution in Croatia whose goals are to promote volunteerism and development of the nonprofit sector, support community-based peace building, and improve ethnic relations. During the grant period, the Centre for Peace, Nonviolence and Human Rights Osijek will strengthen the quality of its core programs, including mediation, peace education, free legal aid, and war crime trial monitoring, through staff development and improved management structures. Over the past two years, the centre's war crimes trials monitoring helped to shape the reform of the Croatian judiciary and increased national and international attention to the importance of war crimes trials in Croatia. The centre also shared its experience with school-based mediation services at regional and national levels, supported the development of volunteer centers in three cities, and purchased office space. The centre is based in Osijek, a city in eastern Croatia.
