South End Museum Trust was established to commemorate the forced removal of people of color from the South End in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape province during the apartheid period. The museum not only documents this shameful episode in South Africa's history, but also serves as a testament to the resilience and courage of the communities that were relocated to far, outlying areas while their homes, businesses, and places of worship were destroyed. Previous support from the Foundation enabled the development of the museum as a community resource that can contribute to promoting healing and reconciliation not only in the Eastern Cape, but also nationally. This grant will provide general purpose support to the grantee to continue to upgrade its facilities and enhance its programs to provide an inspiring, dynamic, and meaningful visitor experience. Activities over the next two years will include conducting exhibitions focusing on the history of the area; holding regular lessons for school learners; and documenting the history of forced removals countrywide.
