Informing the Public about Issues in International Finance and Sustainability: Carbon Market

Since 1977, the Center for Investigative Reporting has independently produced hundreds of investigations for television, print media, radio, and the Web. Its reports have appeared in numerous news outlets and national news programs, and it has had a strong track record of investigating environmental issues, policies, and protections. Over the next year, the grantee will focus on the development of a global carbon market. One of the key elements of an international climate mitigation and finance strategy has been the development of a global carbon market that would allow for the buying and selling of greenhouse gas emission permits known as carbon trading. Outside of individuals in the financial sector, very little is known about the ways that the growing carbon markets actually work. Through this project, the grantee will undertake a yearlong investigative reporting effort to address the dearth of accessible information on the workings of the carbon markets.
