About this grant

This grant will enable Mott Community College to further share its instructional model and innovative curriculum for high school students with school districts throughout Genesee County, the United States and Canada. Mott Middle College High School (MMC) represents several best practices in high school reform and serves as a model for school districts struggling to address the needs of vulnerable students.Multiyear funding will enable MMC to continue providing technical assistance to new and developing middle college/early college programs; and share features of its educational model with new and existing middle college high schools, as well as traditional K-12 public school districts and Michigan higher education teacher certification programs. Activities will include developing ASHP-Teachers as Researchers, a curriculum reform project that brings together the resources and approaches of American history, American literature, American art history and environmental studies to help teachers create supplementary materials for teaching U.S. history from the perspectives of race, class and gender; training local teachers to use this curriculum in traditional Genesee County high schools; and enabling the principal of MMC to continue participating in the National Middle College Consortium, a network of middle-college principals interested in improving student learning through education reform.According to a longitudinal study that examined the educational achievements of MMC’s first 10 graduating classes, the dropout rate for MMC students was 4.9 percent and 84.4 percent of graduates went on to higher education.
