About this grant
Corner House works to promote the adoption of common environmental standards for export credit agencies, in particular the World Bank, European-based export credit agencies and private banks. This grant will enable Corner House to continue research and public education work on environmental, human rights, anticorruption and development standards; monitor private-sector investment, particularly infrastructure development projects; track the impacts of specific projects and programs funded by international financial institutions, particularly in the hydropower and carbon sectors; and undertake media and educational activities on the sustainable development impacts of bilateral investment agreements, in addition to the broader issues of accountability and governance structures raised by regional and multinational trade agreements.Recently, Corner House was able to focus international attention on the counterproductive aspects of a global market in carbon, championed by the World Bank and other international financial institutions; develop new strategies for bringing concerns to the attention of private-sector investors and others in the financial community related to infrastructure development projects; and raise the awareness of international decisionmakers to the use of international investment agreements and treaties that exempt companies and investors from national environmental and social regulations.
