About this grant
The Alabama Rivers Alliance was created to protect the state’s freshwater ecosystems. With Mott support over six years, the alliance has established itself as an effective statewide group, leading policy reform efforts as well as building the capacity of smaller watershed groups across Alabama.Multiyear funding will enable the alliance to continue efforts to reform freshwater policy and build the capacity of state watershed organizations. Activities will include completing a consensus-based plan to reform state water protection policies; participating in ongoing, state-level water policy discussions; taking part in the relicensing processes of hydropower dams in the state; supporting a collaborative effort to reform the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM); and strengthening citizen watershed organizations across the state.Recent achievements included improving the implementation of the Clean Water Act; promoting modifications in the operation of dams on the Black Warrior and Coosa rivers in order to restore natural flows; and increasing the accountability and transparency of ADEM.
