About this grant

This grant will provide general purpose support to the Black Sash Trust, a highly respected organization dedicated to the promotion and defense of human rights in South Africa. The Black Sash Trust operates a national office and seven regional offices throughout South Africa that focus on civil, political, and socioeconomic rights and provides a range of services from legal advice to consumer education and resolving labor matters. Specific activities include providing quality advice on social security and consumer protection, research and legislative monitoring, advocacy efforts aimed at improving social protections, public education workshops and information sessions, and developing rights education material for distribution and use by the print media and local radio. The trust will also continue its work in strengthening the paralegal sector to expand access to social justice by the most vulnerable South Africans.
