About this grant
The Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights established the center to provide in-depth training for human rights activists and representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), mainly from the former Soviet Union. The goal of the center is to increase the professionalism of leaders of human rights and other watchdog organizations in the region.Multiyear funding will enable the center to conduct training seminars in areas such as patients’ rights, juvenile justice, freedom of speech in the media, prisoners’ rights and rights of members of stigmatized groups. It is expected that between 600 and 700 people will participate in 40 to 50 different types of training events each year. The center plans to continue to increase the number of qualified trainers, currently numbering almost 40, through an international advanced course on human rights defense.
