About this grant
The Legal Environmental Assistance Foundation’s (LEAF) Alabama Rivers Ecosystem Project monitors implementation of state and federal water quality policies, as well as seeking institutional reforms of the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM), the agency responsible for protecting state waters.Multiyear funding will support activities that include strengthening water quality standards; improving storm water management programs; and advancing ADEM reform efforts. In addition, LEAF will share research results and policy analysis with interested citizens and non-governmental organizations through its Web site and other publications.Recent achievements included securing an upgrade in the water-use classification for 33 water bodies that will trigger significant pollution reductions; encouraging ADEM to review its antidegradation policy to protect high-quality waters from unnecessary pollution; and persuading ADEM to adopt basic accountability measures.
