About this grant
Friends of the Earth – Japan is the leading environmental non-governmental organization (NGO) in Japan working to reform Japanese export credit agencies (ECAs).Multiyear funding will enable the organization to monitor the implementation of Japanese ECA environmental guidelines and the new compliance mechanism; develop a stronger network of Asian NGOs to work on international financial institution reform; continue discussions with key officials on strengthening ECA monitoring and accountability; participating in the international network to reform ECAs; establish new groups in Japan; and encourage collaborative activities with industry and government.During the past two years, Friends of the Earth-Japan worked on reform efforts at the two Japanese ECAs – Japan Bank for International Cooperation and Nippon Export Investment Insurance – including establishing guidelines for project lending and guarantee insurance to ensure that environmental and social impact assessments are undertaken and creating a compliance mechanism.
