About this grant
Fair Share, based at the University of the Western Cape and active in four South African provinces, works to encourage community participation in local government by facilitating an understanding of budgetary and economic processes.Multiyear funding will enable Fair Share to support the local government transformation program that promotes cooperation between elected leaders and citizens to develop and implement policies that address community needs; support an economic literary course for community leaders and local government officials; conduct research and share best practices and models; publish an annual budget handbook; and encourage networking and partnership building.During the past two years, accomplishments included providing training in economic literacy to approximately 60 people; building the capacity of community leaders and local representatives to understand the budgetary process at the local level; producing an annual analysis of the national budget; publishing research material on South Africa’s development challenges; sharing experiences and expertise on budgetary issues with other organizations in southern Africa; and developing a generic budget analysis training manual.
