About this grant

This grant provides continued general purpose support to Independent Sector, a leadership forum of more than 550 charities, foundations, and corporate giving programs dedicated to advancing the common good by leading, strengthening, and mobilizing the nonprofit and philanthropic community. Major activities over the past two years include advocacy on policies affecting the nonprofit sector, efforts to promote accountability and effectiveness among charities and foundations, and programming aimed at developing next generation nonprofit leaders. The grantee’s 2011-2013 strategic plan will focus on strengthening the nonprofit and philanthropic community’s voice, leadership, and impact. Major areas of activity will include advancing public policies that support the nonprofit sector; building the advocacy capacity of nonprofits; developing a world-class talent pool of diverse nonprofit and philanthropic professionals; and helping nonprofits and foundations to increase their impact by committing to assessing effectiveness, having access to capacity building resources, and adhering to good governance and ethical practice guidelines.
