About this grant
The Project on Ethnic Relations is dedicated to reducing ethnic tensions in Central and Southeast Europe and the former Soviet Union. During the past 14 years, the project has been involved in crafting several important interethnic agreements, making a significant contribution to peace and stability in this region. Multiyear funding will enable the project to encourage alternatives to conflicts; assist in the development of indigenous institutions to address ethnic tension; influence opinion leaders; and train experts in the field. Specific activities will include mediating ethnic conflicts, with a particular focus on Kosovo; exploring regional issues, such as international response to ethnic conflict in the post-communist space; and building confidence between Romani communities and majority populations.Recent achievements included organizing roundtable talks between the Romanian government and its Hungarian minority; facilitating multilateral discussions between officials regarding relations between Albanians and their neighbors; and negotiating an agreement between the parliamentary parties in Serbia and Montenegro and the minority ethnic Albanian parties to reduce the potential for ethnic violence.
