About this grant
ISAR is an international nonprofit organization that assists environmental grassroots initiatives in the former Soviet Union with seed grants, training and information services. Working through its eight field offices, ISAR will make environmental advocacy its primary focus.Multiyear funding will enable ISAR to direct efforts toward building advocacy skills, organizing international campaigns, increasing public participation and influencing public policy on environmental issues. The Environmental Advocacy Project will serve as the core of ISAR’s programs. Activities will include partnering with the Advocacy Institute to develop a train-the-trainers program for representatives from its field offices; and partnering with both former Soviet Union-based and American nonprofits to conduct environmental monitoring and research and address environmental media and information issues.Activities during the past two years included helping the field offices raise funds; organizing exchanges for Russian and Azerbaijani environmentalists; convening forums on environmental and civil society building issues related to Russia, Central Asia and the Caspian Basin; and publishing a journal and newsletter.
