About this grant

The goal of the Access to Information Programme is to increase effective public participation in decisionmaking by ensuring that people in Bulgaria understand their rights and have access to information. The program encourages citizens to expect information and advocates for transparency in government and greater public access to information. It carries out its work through a countrywide network of journalists and lawyers.Multiyear funding will support activities that include monitoring the implementation of access to information laws and regulations and reporting findings to the public and the government; providing legal assistance and consultations in cases of violation of access to information laws and regulations; raising public awareness of access to information laws; advocating for improved access to information laws and practices as a way to increase governmental transparency and accountability; and participating in national, regional and international networks and campaigns to improve access to information.Activities during the past two years included surveying and monitoring the implementation of Bulgaria’s Access to Public Information Act; participating in the Freedom of Information Global Monitoring Pilot Project; and publishing or contributing to more than 250 publications related to access to information.
