About this grant
CIVICUS is a broad alliance of civil society organizations worldwide. It works to disseminate civil society information; offer broad meeting and partnership opportunities to nonprofit organizations across the globe; assist in removing the legal obstacles impeding the development of the voluntary sector; and promote a political and cultural environment favorable to giving, volunteering and citizen action.Multiyear funding will enable the organization to focus on planning and conducting the next World Assembly, scheduled for March 2004, in Gabarone, Botswana; expanding the Civil Society Index project to nearly 40 participating countries; plan its legitimacy and transparency effort and participatory governance initiative; contribute to civil society discussions of intergovernmental and multilateral agencies; and continue to disseminate information on the state of civil society worldwide through it online newsletter, print newsletter and Web site.During the past year, CIVICUS refined its program plan to focus on key issues that affect civil society worldwide. The five project areas include Civil Society Watch, Civil Society Index, Legitimacy and Transparency Program, Participatory Governance Program and the World Assembly.
